Frequently Asked Questions
Whether you're thinking about attending an event, spending some time studying with us, hiring one of our spaces or bringing an idea of your own to Ivy’s Study, we've answered some of the questions you might have below. If you can't find what you're looking for, please get in touch. We're always happy to help.
Visiting Ivy’s Study
Where is Ivy’s Study?
Ivy’s Study is based in Seaton, Devon, alongside Everchange Emporium. Full directions, travel information and details about visiting us can be found on our Visit Ivy’s Study page.
Is Ivy’s Study part of Everchange Emporium?
Yes, although Ivy’s Study has its own identity and purpose. Ivy’s Study has grown from the community, teaching and conversations that have developed around Everchange Emporium. While Everchange remains our retail space, Ivy’s Study provides a dedicated home for learning, talks, workshops, study, gatherings and events. You certainly don't need to be an Everchange customer to come along. Everyone is welcome to discover what's happening at Ivy’s Study.
Can I just visit Ivy’s Study?
Ivy’s Study isn't intended to operate in quite the same way as a shop or café with continuous drop-in opening hours. Most visits will be connected to an event, booked study session, private hire, pop-up or other scheduled activity. Keep an eye on our What's On page and social media for opportunities to visit.
What kind of events will you hold?
Variety is an important part of the idea. You might find talks, workshops, demonstrations, discussions, visiting speakers, practical sessions, creative gatherings, book events, pop-ups and community events. Our roots mean that witchcraft, paganism, spirituality and folklore will naturally feature, but Ivy’s Study isn't limited to these subjects. We hope to explore everything from philosophy and history to nature, literature, creativity, traditional skills and subjects we haven't discovered yet.
Do I need to know anything about a subject before attending?
Unless an event specifically says otherwise, absolutely not. Ivy’s Study is built around curiosity. Beginners are welcome, questions are encouraged and nobody should feel that they need to already understand a subject before they're allowed to explore it.
Events & Tickets
Where can I see upcoming events?
Do I need to book events in advance?
This will depend on the event, although we expect most ticketed events to require advance booking because places will be limited. Individual event listings will explain exactly how to book and anything you need to know before attending.
Who runs the events?
Some events will be hosted by Ivy’s Study founder Kerri-Ann Betty, MA, while others will introduce visiting speakers, teachers, academics, authors, practitioners, makers and other interesting people with knowledge and ideas to share. We want Ivy’s Study to become somewhere many different voices and areas of expertise can be encountered.
Will events be recorded?
Some may be. We hope to develop professional recording facilities that allow selected talks and sessions to be recorded with the agreement of the host. Recording will never be assumed simply because an event takes place at Ivy’s Study. Where an event is being recorded, appropriate information will be provided to attendees.
Using The Study
Can I hire The Study just to read or work?
Yes. In fact, that's an important part of why it exists. Our Personal Study option allows one person to privately use The Study for non-commercial reading, writing, research or study. You don't need to be studying for a formal qualification. If there's something you want to give your undivided attention to, that's reason enough.
Can I use The Study for my work?
Yes. The Study can also be privately hired for suitable professional activities such as tutoring, mentoring, consultations, meetings and one-to-one sessions.
Can several of us study together?
Yes. Small study and discussion groups are welcome, subject to the comfortable capacity of the room. Group use falls under our standard private-hire pricing rather than the individual Personal Study rate.
Hiring Ivy’s Study
Can I hire the rooms without working directly with Ivy’s Study?
Yes. You can independently hire our spaces and manage your own activity, attendees and bookings, subject to our hire terms and the proposed use being suitable for the venue. Alternatively, if you have an idea that you think would work as part of the official Ivy’s Study programme, we'd love you to approach us about collaborating.
How much does it cost?
Prices vary depending on the room and how you intend to use it. Full details can be found on our Hire & Pricing page.
What's included with room hire?
This will depend on your booking. Standard room hire includes use of the agreed space and its standard furnishings for the duration of your booking. Additional arrangements may be available for events requiring different furniture configurations, presentation facilities, recording equipment or additional support. Tell us what you're planning when you enquire and we'll discuss what you need.
Does my booking time include setting up?
Yes. Unless we have agreed otherwise, your booking should allow sufficient time for you to set up before your activity and clear away afterwards. If you require additional setup time, please mention this when enquiring.
Can I hire Ivy’s Study regularly?
Yes. We're happy to discuss recurring arrangements with suitable tutors, mentors, practitioners, groups and other regular users. Reduced rates may be available for agreed blocks of recurring bookings.
Hosting & Working With Us
I'd like to give a talk or workshop. Can I approach you?
Please do. You don't need to wait for us to approach you, and you don't need to have a perfectly developed event proposal before making contact. Tell us a little about yourself, your subject and what you'd be interested in sharing. Visit our Work With Us page to find out more.
Do I need to be an academic or professional speaker?
No. Qualifications and professional experience can be important in some areas, but they're not the only forms of knowledge we value. We want to hear from academics and researchers, but also authors, practitioners, craftspeople, makers, independent researchers and people who have developed genuine knowledge and experience within their field. What matters is that you have something worthwhile to share and approach your subject thoughtfully and responsibly.
Do I need to have a large social-media following?
No. We're interested in what you know and what you can bring to the space, not simply how many followers you have. An existing audience can certainly help when promoting an event, but follower numbers alone won't determine who we work with.
What subjects are you looking for?
We're deliberately keeping this broad. Our programme may include witchcraft • paganism • folklore • philosophy • history • spirituality • nature • literature • art • creativity • traditional skills • wellbeing • research • writing and much more. If you're wondering whether your idea is too unusual, we'd still encourage you to ask. Some of the most interesting events at Ivy’s Study may be ones we haven't thought of ourselves.
Pop-Up Shops
Can I hold a pop-up shop at Ivy’s Study?
Yes. We welcome enquiries from independent makers, authors, artists, specialist retailers, creatives and small businesses interested in temporarily bringing their work into a physical space.
Can I combine a pop-up with another activity?
Potentially, yes. A pop-up could work particularly well alongside a book signing, demonstration, meet-the-maker session, mini workshop or talk. Tell us your idea and we can explore what's possible.
A Few More Things
Is Ivy’s Study only for people interested in witchcraft?
Not at all. Our connection with Everchange Emporium means witchcraft, paganism and spirituality are part of our story, but Ivy’s Study has been deliberately created to reach much further. At its heart, this is a space for curious people.
Can I suggest an event even if I don't want to host it myself?
Absolutely, we'd actually love this. If there's a subject you'd like us to explore, something you've always wanted to learn about, or a speaker, author or specialist you'd love us to invite, please tell us. Our community will play an important role in shaping what Ivy’s Study becomes.
Is Ivy’s Study finished?
We hope it never really is. We have plans to develop our equipment, programme, visiting hosts, recorded content and the ways people can use the space as Ivy’s Study grows. Some ideas will come from us. Others will come from the people who visit, teach, study and gather here. That's part of the ethos behind Ivy’s Study: remain curious, keep learning and allow things to evolve.
Still Have a Question?
If there's something we haven't covered, we'd love to hear from you. Whether you have a practical question, an unusual idea or simply want to know whether Ivy’s Study might be suitable for something you're planning, get in touch.
